What is a blood pressure monitor?
A blood pressure monitor is a machine that measures the pressure on your arteries caused by your blood flow.

How do I get precise readings?
Sit still for 5 minutes and relax. Make sure there’s no obstruction between your skin and the blood pressure monitor. Fasten the velcro around your left wrist, and you should only be able to get a single finger underneath the cuff. Finally, rest your arm and wrist at heart level to get precise results.

What is the average blood pressure reading?
A normal reading would be any blood pressure below 120(systolic)/80(diastolic) mm Hg and above 90/60 mm Hg.

What are systolic pressure and diastolic pressure?
Systolic blood pressure measures the amount of pressure the blood exerts on arteries and vessels while the heart is beating. Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure that is exerted on the walls of various arteries around the body in between heartbeats while the heart is relaxed.

What is the standard blood pressure classification?
Blood pressure readings are expressed in millimeters of mercury, which is abbreviated as mm Hg.

Why does my blood pressure fluctuate throughout the day?
Things such as stress levels, time of day, temperature, OTC medicines, exercise, a full bladder, food choices, caffeine, and a number of other factors can affect your blood pressure numbers.

Why do I get a different blood pressure at home compared to the hospital?
Sometimes people can get what is called “white-coat hypertension,” which means that their natural levels of stress are increased by being in a stressful environment, such a doctor’s office.

What should I avoid before taking a blood pressure reading?
Avoid caffeine and alcohol 30 minutes before taking a reading. Take your blood pressure readings before your first cigarette of the day and before any strenuous physical activity.

How do I get precise results?
Take 2-3 readings to get an average of your results.
